Southern California is bracing for a dangerous, prolonged heat wave expected to last through early next week, with temperatures running 5 to 10 degrees above normal across the region. Thursday through Sunday will be the most intense stretch, with the western San Fernando Valley potentially hitting 106°F and the Coachella Valley facing an extreme 112 to 117°F — with overnight lows staying in the mid-80s to mid-90s, offering almost no relief. Heat advisories and extreme heat warnings are in effect across much of LA, Orange, San Diego, and Inland Empire counties. Officials are urging residents — especially the very young, elderly, and those without air conditioning — to stay hydrated, seek cool spaces, and check on neighbors. |

Renting now beats buying across California — and it's not particularly close, according to a new report from rental marketplace Zumper.
After analyzing housing costs in more than 80 U.S. markets, Zumper found California dominates the list of metros where monthly homeownership costs far outpace renting. The comparison factored in mortgage payments, property taxes, and homeowners insurance against median rents.
San Jose topped the national rankings, where a median home price of $2.03 million translates to roughly $11,666 per month to own — about $8,593 more than the city's median rent. Anaheim, San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles all landed in the top nine nationally.
A separate UC Berkeley report adds sobering context: California's homeownership rate among adults has fallen to just 43.5 percent — second lowest in the nation — and the typical age at which a majority of Californians first buy a home is now 49, compared with roughly 35 in most other states.
Researchers say soaring prices, not demographics, are the primary culprit, and that expanding the supply of smaller, more affordable housing is essential to turning the tide. |

California Rail Agencies Sign MOU to Accelerate Statewide High-Speed Network |

California's high-speed rail ambitions just got a significant boost. The California High-Speed Rail Authority and the High Desert Corridor Joint Powers Agency have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding, formalizing a deeper partnership aimed at building out a fully connected, statewide electrified rail network.
The agreement focuses on tightening coordination across several critical areas, including environmental clearances, station integration, and design work. Palmdale Station is a particular focal point of the collaboration, positioning it as a key hub in the emerging network.
Beyond planning, the two agencies intend to pursue coordinated materials purchases and joint construction strategies — moves designed to reduce costs to the public and speed up project delivery.
The announcement signals a growing momentum behind California's long-term vision of linking communities across the state through high-speed, electrified transit. By aligning their efforts early, the Authority and the HDC JPA hope to avoid duplication, streamline approvals, and present a more unified path forward for one of the nation's most ambitious infrastructure undertakings.
For rail advocates and commuters alike, this partnership represents a concrete step toward making that vision a practical reality — not just a blueprint on paper. |

The way customers find local businesses is quietly but significantly shifting. For years, showing up in a Google search was enough — but today, more people are turning to AI assistants and asking conversational questions like "Who are the most trusted roofers in my area?" instead of typing keywords into a search bar.
That shift creates a real challenge for small businesses. If your information online is incomplete, inconsistent, or hard for AI tools to interpret, you may simply not come up when it matters most. The businesses that tend to get recommended more often share a few things in common: clear descriptions, accurate contact details, up-to-date websites, and strong trust signals like photos and reviews.
Keeping up with every new change in search and AI can feel overwhelming — most business owners don't have the time. The core advice here is simple: make sure your business information is complete, consistent, and easy to understand across the web. The fundamentals of being discoverable haven't disappeared — they've just expanded to a new set of tools customers are already using. |

California is stepping in where the federal government stepped out. Nearly a year after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired, Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced a new state-level incentive designed to keep electric vehicle sales moving.
Under Senate Bill 168, which took effect July 1, eligible first-time EV buyers can receive an instant $3,500 rebate on new electric vehicles priced at $50,000 or less, and $1,750 off used EVs under $25,000. Thirteen major automakers are partnering with the state to deliver the discount at the point of sale — no waiting until tax season.
The program is backed by $135 million included in California's $352 billion state budget. Only first-time EV owners qualify, and buyers must confirm they've never previously owned an electric vehicle. The move comes as national EV sales have dipped following the rollback of federal incentives, while California continues to lead the country — EVs and hybrids made up nearly 24 percent of new passenger vehicle registrations in the state last year. |

Antelope Valley Partners for Health (AVPH) is working to transform health outcomes for one of Southern California's most underserved communities — residents living at or below the poverty line in the geographically isolated Antelope Valley region.
The organization tackles a sweeping range of challenges faced by a diverse population that often lacks basic access to care. Its efforts span mental health support in schools, dental care for low-income children, nutrition programs for families, and women's health education.
AVPH also addresses housing concerns for transitional foster youth, provides case management for pregnant women, and has built a community-wide network to support at-risk youth and their families. A dedicated consortium serves senior citizens, while transportation barriers — a major obstacle in rural areas — are actively being addressed.
From frontline services to local health policy, AVPH has positioned itself as a central force in shaping a healthier, more equitable future for the Antelope Valley. |

A lottery player in Palmdale, California just turned a near-miss into a $7.3 million windfall. The ticket, purchased at Alrabadi Gas & Mini Mark on East Palmdale Boulevard, matched five of six winning Mega Millions numbers — missing only the Mega Ball — making it the second-largest second-place prize for the game since 2014.
The gas station itself earns a $36,500 bonus for selling the lucky ticket. And since no one hit the full jackpot, the Mega Millions prize climbs to an eye-popping $743 million for the next drawing on Friday. |

Joke Of The Day |
Someone asked me what it's like living in Antelope Valley. I said it's basically just wind, tumbleweeds, and people who are deeply committed to a 45-minute commute.
They said that sounds awful. I said yeah, but the sunsets hit different when you've earned them. |
